Unusually large, heavy, knotted and twisted cooper bracelet-form manilla. Also known as bochie. Used for currency in Nigeria. On custom base. Made in nineteenth century by native blacksmiths from imported European copper rods and bars that were twisted like ropes. Manillas like this were often placed in graves. Diameter 7.5in. 3 lb 7oz. Igbo people, Nigeria. Exhibited Pen and Brush Gallery, New York, 2003.
