Carved ivory Bingham straight razor with elaborate pinwork. Carved ivory handle has hundreds of individual silver pins tapped into the front scale to form an magnificent pattern around the German silver escutcheon plate. Maker: James Bingham Sheffield. The pile side carved ivory scale has a name and the date 1847 scratched in by the original owner. The semi hollow ground blade has a worked top edge. There is a period repair pin added to reinforce the ivory handle at the head pin where there is an age crack and a chip. Age cracks are quite commonly found on old ivory handles. This is a very rare example of "pique work" that was popular from about 1820-50.
