The company did not start as a jewelry and silver shop, but as a provider of stationery and fancy goods under the name Tiffany & Young. In 1841, J. L. Ellis joined the firm as a partner changing the name to Tiffany, Young & Ellis. 14 years later both Young and Ellis retired, giving Charles Tiffany control of the company changing the name to Tiffany & Company.
