Two Chinese reverse glass paintings incl one concubine of Emperor Yong Zheng. Leaning against a table set on a balcony dressed in a voluminous light blue gown with gold embroidered floral designs, she hold a ginseng root noted for its healthful qualities in her elegant fingers. On the table are a folded fan and a box containing pieces for a game board. Also outlined with gold are her earrings and hair ornaments, a vase and the flowers in it, the balcony rail, the bamboo stalks, leaves, and flowers outside the rail, and tow butterflies. The use of so much gold in this painting indicates the importance of the subject. Chinese inscriptions explain the scene. Dating from the early 20th century Republic period (1900-1909), this finely painted work is in the original wooden frame with a brass hanger, 15" x 21", also having this beautiful concubine seated at a table is day dreaming as she reads a book beside a plume of incense. A large blue drape has been drawn back to reveal a night scene that is reflected in a mirror behind the table. Rising behind the woman is a mystical bird-like figure that is probably the subject of the woman's reverie. This work dating from the Republic period (1900-1909) is in the original black lacquered frame with brass hanger, 14.5" x 20.5".
