After 50+ years of collecting straight razors, Robert A. Doyle will be offering at auction his life-time collection of fancy and unusual straight razors. Up for bid now are 240 lots of the finest, unique celluloid handled razors featured in Doyle’s book, Celluloid Handle Guide for Straight Razor Collectors, Reflecting on Fifty Years of Handle Designs (1870-1920), published in 2005. Also offered are additional pieces that were found after the book was published and some original cutlery advertising display cases. Doyle, an Auctioneer/Appraiser/Real Estate Broker, started collecting at 16 years of age and turns sixty-seven this month. When asked why straight razors? Doyle responded, "They are small, beautiful, historic, one-of-a-kind artistic pieces that are nearly impossible to reproduce. There are no "fakes" to be concerned with." He continued, "It is time to allow others the opportunity to own and enjoy these beautiful shaving tools. The straight razor was the most prized personal tool of men through the ages." This razor was illustrated, in color, in "Straight Razor Collecting, An Illustrated Price Guide," that I wrote and published in 1980. Illustrated in a photo in the "Pattern" section to the book P25.

Straight razor. J.B. Solingen. Blade features a gilt map and the word "Cuba". Celluloid handle has a lion head with mane and snarling teeth on a checkered board torso on one side, on the other is the maned lion again but without the extended checkerboard body. This razor is featured on page 42 of the "Celluloid Handle Guide for Straight Razor Collectors" by Robert A. Doyle. One of five straight razors featured on the front cover of my 2005 book "Celluloid Handle Guide for Straight Razor Collectors, Reflecting on Fifty Years of Handle Designs (1870-1920)." This is the only example of this handle pattern that I have ever seen.

Imitation ivory handle has a raised pattern of a boy wearing a hat with German writing above and below. This appears to be a Miner with crossed tools above and him standing on a chain driven elevator platform. The pile side is smooth and rounded. This pattern was a late addition to the collection after the 2005 publishing of the Celluloid Handle Guide. This is the only example of this handle pattern that I have ever seen.

Straight razor. Engelswerk. C.W. Engels Solingen. Pile side if stamped Pilatus G-Stahl. Similar to #131, #132 and #133. The “Picture Handles” were popular from 1870 through the 1920’s. This one has three photographs of famous figures on the front in portrait style as well as lady liberty and an eagle near the pivot pin. The pile side has an ornate background with German writing in the center. This is the only example of this handle pattern that I have ever seen.
