Straight razor. Wm. Elliot & Co. Made in Germany. Number “216 R” stamped on tang. Imitation ivory handle has raised scene of driver and passenger driving in early touring car with headlights on and farm in background. Pile side is rounded and plain. I have examined a total of seven of this handle pattern. All were imitation ivory devoid of color. All were attached to Wm. Elliot blades. All tangs were stamped with “216.” However, most of the time the letter was “G” rather than “R.” It appears that Wm. Elliot & Co. had an exclusive on the offering of this handle pattern. This razor was illustrated, in color, in "Straight Razor Collecting, An Illustrated Price Guide," that I wrote and published in 1980. This is razor # 22 in the "Celluloid Handle Guide for Straight Razor Collectors, Reflecting on Fifty Years of Handle Designs (1870-1920).", published in 2005 and written by Robert A. Doyle.

Straight razor. Petrus, Saad & Bros. Made in Germany. Imitation ivory handle with raised sailing ship in center flanked by waving flags. Pile side is rounded and plain. Note: This particular pattern has the words “The Meteor” and “1902” in the dividing area between the sailboat and flags. All seven of the other patterns I inspected were plain, devoid of name and date, in that same area. The makers of the other seven patterns included Antoni Tadross (2), H. Boker, Keschner Solingen, Wm. Morley & Sons, Hibbard Spencer, Bartlett & Co. and Thomas Mfg. Rare. This razor is commemorating the christening & launching of Kaiser Wilhelm's yacht in 1902 in Newark Bay in 1902. President Roosevelt and the Mayor of New York were in attendance. http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/577351/Christening-and-Launching-Kaiser-Wilhelm-s-Yacht-Meteor-/full-synopsis.html. This ship had both the flags of Germany and America displayed on it when launched with lots of international dignitaries in attendance. This is razor # 23 in the "Celluloid Handle Guide for Straight Razor Collectors, Reflecting on Fifty Years of Handle Designs (1870-1920).", published in 2005 and written by Robert A. Doyle. Straight razor. G. Baker & Sons. Imitation ivory handle with raised spread eagle in center holding laurel branches. Each end of handle on both sides has stars and stripes. Pile side does not have eagle, just ornate ends to match front. Five others that were inspected included: Karl Engels, J. Dirlam & Sons, Yankee Cutlery Co., Germania and The Admirals. Very popular patriotic pattern that is scarce. This razor was featured in my article "A Look at Fancy Celluloid" in the June 1983 issue of "The Blade" magazine. This is razor # 24 in the "Celluloid Handle Guide for Straight Razor Collectors, Reflecting on Fifty Years of Handle Designs (1870-1920).", published in 2005 and written by Robert A. Doyle.

Straight razor. Simmons Hardware Co. Germany. Imitation ivory handle with raised full-length pattern of birds flying over sailboat above red flowers with green leaves. Center cartouche has small spread eagle holding snake. Pile side is rounded and plain. I have only witnessed one other of this pattern; it was also marked the same as this one. In fact, both blades were etched the same: Barber’s Rattler. I believe that this very rare pattern was exclusive to Simmons Hardware Co. This is razor # 25 in the "Celluloid Handle Guide for Straight Razor Collectors, Reflecting on Fifty Years of Handle Designs (1870-1920).", published in 2005 and written by Robert A. Doyle.

Straight razor. Ern. Imitation ivory handle with raised eagle fighting snake on front. Pile side is rounded and plain. Rare. Note: After numbering and photographing the handle patterns for this book, I discovered that what I thought was a duplicate to this pattern was actually a slight variation to it. This razor was featured in my article "A Look at Fancy Celluloid" in the June 1983 issue of "The Blade" magazine. This is razor # 26 in the "Celluloid Handle Guide for Straight Razor Collectors" by Robert A. Doyle. The other example is lot/This is razor #144.

Straight razor. Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. Imitation ivory handle has raised cowboy on horseback with lasso in raised arm and blue jewel insets above and below in ornate swirl pattern background. Pile side is rounded and plain. I have examined a total of five of this pattern. All were attached to blades of the same maker. I believe this pattern is exclusive to Hibbard, Spencer & Bartlett. Note: Most of the time, this rare pattern will be found missing either one or both of the small oval jewels. If one is missing, it is usually from the tang end, since that is where the shaver gripped the razor. This razor was featured in my article "A Look at Fancy Celluloid" in the June 1983 issue of "The Blade" magazine. This is razor # 27 in the "Celluloid Handle Guide for Straight Razor Collectors" by Robert A. Doyle.
