Straight razor. Manufactured by Wade & Butcher Sheffield. Extremely rare select horn handle. Kurt bought this at Auction from my collection years ago. This Handle material is the rarest that you will find on an early Razor. I have witnessed four, including the folding straight razor carried by the Duke of Marlborough. All four that I have encountered over the past 50 years, I kept. You will search for many years and most likely will never find one. I do not know why this "select horn" is so rare. It must have been extremely hard to find this kind of grain on a single horn.

Straight razors. Two Joseph Rodgers Sheffield fancy carved handled razors. One has natural material with inlaid pin, pique work pattern around the escutcheon plate. Note: Pique work was the art of inlaying tiny silver pins, by hand, into the predrilled holes of the pattern. It was a cottage industry done in homes around the manufacturing city of Sheffield. This artistry was popular from about 1820-1840's. Pique work was performed on horn, pearl, tortoiseshell, ivory and bone. You will not find two identical pieces. Even the pins are set by hand so they are not even in height.

#79 – Straight razor set. Extremely rare Clark & Hall, one handled, three bladed set fitted in original presentation leather covered wood case. C-1820. This is the only three bladed set I have seen with one handle. The natural handle material is inlaid with a unique pattern of pique work silver pins surrounding the escutcheon plate. The handle has a unique locking device that only accommodates these three blades each stamped "3." These one Handled seven day sets are extremely rare and were produced for a very short period of time, approximately 1820-1840. Further, each locking device is numbered to correspond with the specific shaped tang that fits it. In this case the number is "3." which is on the tangs. You could not lock these blades into the handle of any other similar set. Good luck on acquiring this fine example. This razor set was featured by Kurt Moe in "THE RAZOR ANTHOLOGY" book on page 23 of his article titled INTERCHANGEABLE BLADES. (THE RAZOR ANTHOLOGY: A collection of selected articles about razors reprinted from monthly issues of Knife World. Copyright 1995 Knife World Publications. Illustrated, 246 pages. The book contains 72 articles by various authors. However, it is important to note that of the 72 articles Kurt Moe authored 53 of them. 73.6% of the book was comprised of Kurt's thoughts and examples from his extensive collection. Reference will be made on individual lot offerings featured in the book of the article title and page number. A limited supply of this book is available at $25 including shipping anywhere in the USA.)
