Roberts Warranted. Super Rare 18thC straight razor having a select horn handle with inlaid escutcheon plate and an etched blade. This is a one of a kind rarity. This Handle material is the rarest that you will find in an early Razor. I have witnessed four, including the folding straight razor carried by the Duke of Marlborough. All four that I have encountered over the past 50 years, I kept. You will search for many years and most likely will never find one. I do not know why this "select horn" is so rare. It must have been extremely hard to find this kind of grain on a single horn. It is very rare to find a straight razor that boasts both a fancy blade and fancy handle. Usually, the cutlery manufacturers provided one or the other. But, not both. The etching on the blade appears to make this a one of a kind personalized presentation razor. This is the finest select horn Revolutionary War Period full size straight razor I have ever seen.

Straight razor. Martin & Co. The only razor I have seen by this maker. Very uniquely shaped tang grip. Wedge blade. C-1830’s. Black Buffalo horn handle has inlaid escutcheon plate surrounding by silver pin inlaid pique work. Note: Pique work was the art of inlaying tiny silver pins, by hand, into the predrilled holes of the pattern. It was a cottage industry done in homes around the manufacturing city of Sheffield. This artistry was popular from about 1820-1840's. Pique work was performed on horn, pearl, tortoiseshell, ivory and bone. You will not find two identical pieces. Even the pins are set by hand so they are not even in height. Very rare.

Three early 19thC horn handled straight razors including “Clark & Hall,” “Wostenholm,” “Brightmore.” The Brightmore was from the Famous Henry T. Lummus Collection and bears the inventory number of “665.” The number is an inventory number from the Henry T. Lummus Collection assembled before 1920. Lummus wrote articles on straight Razor Collecting for "Antiques" magazine in the 1920's. Although I bought his 500 piece collection from his Estate over 40 years ago, and tried to review all the designs to try and find what they had in common, I could not break the code. The scratched number on the pile side head end identifies this piece as part of the Henry T. Lummus Collection assembled before 1920.
