Mary Sue and Paul Peter Rosen have collected African art for over thirty years, making nine trips to Africa to study the art in its cultural setting. The Rosens have published three African art books, curated more than ten exhibitions from their collection, and have given public lectures about African art and culture. The value of these bars derived from their convertibility by blacksmiths into tools, weapons, and decorative objects such as jewelry. Although initially imported by European traders, in time much of the bar currency in Africa was made from locally smelted iron and copper ore. (A) 18th century imported European copper bar cut from a longer rod. The length is typical for the short copper bars used as currency in the Congo. On custom base. H 8.75in. (B) Tetela or Nkutshu people, Congo. Copper bar with a central bulge forged by local blacksmiths and referred to as kunga. Note the blacksmith's hammer marks. On custom base. H 9in.
