#3 – George Lafayette Clough (1824-1901). View of The Hudson Highlands near Anthony's Nose. Featured in the Exhibition "This Perfect River-View": The Hudson River School and Contemporaries in Private Collections in the Highlands. The exhibit ran from July 20th to November 25, 2007 at the Putnam County Historical Society & Foundry School Museum in Cold Spring, NY. This painting was featured on page 23 of the 67 page catalog for the exhibition. It was also on exhibit at Boscobel historic home in Garrison and still retains original exhibit sticker #6. Bio: George Lafayette Clough was born September 18, 1824, in Auburn, New York, and was that city's leading landscapist and, known as a Hudson River School painter, became Auburn's most noted resident painter of the mid-century. His mother was widowed shortly after his birth, and he was raised without paternal influence. He had little formal education and was employed by the age of ten. By age fifteen he had taken up painting, and his first and informal art influence came from the portraitist, Randall Palmer. In 1844 Clough opened his own studio in Auburn. About that time Charles Loring Elliott came to Auburn to paint a portrait of William Henry Seward, a local statesman, and chose Clough's studio for that purpose. Elliott became Clough's teacher, and in 1847, he began formal study for several months in Elliott's New York City studio. He returned to Auburn from that experience a competent professional portraitist. Two of his portraits were exhibited at the National Academy of Design the following year. He married and briefly shared a studio in Auburn with Joseph Meeker. In the early 1850's, he traveled to France, Holland, Italy, and Germany to study. While in each location, Clough would study the local painting traditions and copy some of their works, a common custom of American artists. Upon return to the United States, his efforts concentrated primarily on landscapes. His favorite locales included the Adirondacks, and the woodland areas of upper New York State, Pennsylvania, New England, and Eastern Ohio. When he moved to Cleveland about 1862, Clough began painting urban views. Spending most of the 1880's in the New York City area, he became involved in the Brooklyn Art Association. He returned to his hometown of Auburn several years before his death. Sight 11.5x6.5". 11.5" x 6.5" sight, 15" x 10" canvas

#6 – Framed Victor De Grailly (1804-1889) oil on canvass "West Point on the Hudson (Kosciusko Monument) featured as plate number 19 on page 35 of "This Perfect River-View": The Hudson River School and Contemporaries in Private Collections in the Highlands. The exhibit ran from July 20th to November 25, 2007 at the Putnam County Historical Society & Foundry School Museum in Cold Spring, NY. It was also featured as #8 at a former Historic Boscobel Home art exhibit. Bio from AskArt: French painter Victor de Grailly, 1804-1889, working in a Hudson River School landscape style, is said to have lived in the United States from 1840 to 1870, but, according to Peter Falk, "no evidence has been found to confirm this statement". Most of his paintings of American scenes were based on engravings he saw in France in William Henry Bartlett's book, American Scenery, London, 1840. De Grailly studied in France with neo-classical landscape painter Victor Bertin, whose influence remained with De Grailly, although a more romantic feeling developed in his later work. According to one source, De Grailly was also profoundly influenced by a trip to the United States and a journey up the Hudson River that he made as a young man, painting scenes of the Hudson based on Bartlett prints. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1833 and continued to exhibit, but with less frequency, until 1880. De Grailly was only moderately responsive to the Barbizon painters, preferring to paint in the idealized landscape style he learned from Bertin. Victor De Grailly's work was included in the exhibition, "All That Is Glorious Around Us: Paintings From The Hudson River School", that traveled to the Westmoreland Museum of Art, Greensburg, Pennsylvania, August 10 - October 26, 1997; Palmer Museum of Art, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, January 20 - May 17, 1998; Worcester Art Museum, Massachusetts, March 13 - June 27, 1999; and the National Academy of Design, New York City, July 14 - September 12, 1999. A book of the same title was written by John Driscoll and published by Cornell University Press, Ithaca and London, in 1997. De Grailly's work was also shown in an exhibition in 2003 of 19th-Century paintings from public and private collections, Poetic Joining: The Hudson River and the Highlands, at the Putnam County Historical Society and Foundry School Museum, Cold Spring, NY. 20.25x28.". 20.5" x 28" sight, 21" x 29"

#10 – Framed 19thC watercolor signed "Carl Weber." underglass. (1850-1921) Bio from AskArt: Carl Weber, a watercolor and oil painter, should not be confused with his cousin Carl Philipp Weber. Carl C, Weber was born on Oct. 18, 1850, in Philadelphia, the son of Daniel Gottlieb Paul Weber (Paul Weber in common usage), a well-known German artist who had emigrated with his wife Emma and family to the U.S. in late 1848 or early 1849. Early in the 1860s, probably in 1861, Paul Weber returned to Germany to continue his career as an artist in an important official post. In addition to studying with his father in Frankfort, Carl Weber also studied in Munich, Vienna and Paris before returning to Philadelphia sometime in the 1870s, probably around 1874. Following his return, he lived and worked in Philadelphia until his death on January 25, 1921. During his career he exhibited at many expositions, winning a gold medal in London in 1873, a number of honorable mentions at other expositions, and in 1902 a gold medal from the American Art Society for watercolors. Carl Weber is most noted for his oil paintings of landscapes in the by then traditional romantic style, and for his pastoral scenes in watercolor, lighter in tone, although he occasionally ventured outside of these styles in both mediums. The Weber cousins, Carl (1850-1921) and Carl Philipp (1849-1922), artists of Philadelphia Carl Philipp Weber (sometimes with one terminal p on the middle name and occasionally (mistakenly) with Charles as a first name) was born in Darmstadt, Germany in 1849, probably late in the year. #13 – 19thC Frances ("Fanny") Flora Bond Palmer (l812-1876) framed "View of West Point" oil on canvas. 23x31.75" Featured in the Exhibition "This Perfect River-View": The Hudson River School and Contemporaries in Private Collections in the Highlands. The exhibit ran from July 20th to November 25, 2007 at the Putnam County Historical Society & Foundry School Museum in Cold Spring, NY. This painting was featured as plate 9 on page 27 of the 67 page catalog for the exhibition. Fanny Palmer was one of the premier artists for Currier & Ives, the most famous publishers of lithographic prints in mid-nineteenth century America. She is generally regarded as the leading American woman lithographer of her time. Born in Leicester, England, the daughter of an attorney, she received an excellent education at a school for girls in Leicester, run by Mary Linwood (herself a well-known stitchery artist). After marrying Edmund Seymour Palmer in l832 and bearing a daughter and son, she and her husband opened a lithography business in Leicester around l842 under the company name "F. & S. Palmer". Fanny was the principal artist and lithographer, and Edmund was primarily the printer, although he may have done some lithography as well. The Palmers immigrated to the United States late in l843, settling in New York City, where they continued to produce a great variety of lithographs for other publishers, as well as in their own name. Around l849, after they moved to Brooklyn, Nathaniel Currier hired Mrs. Palmer as a staff artist and Mr. Palmer dropped out of the business. He died in l857 from a fall downstairs, attributed by colleagues and friends to alcoholism. From that time forward Fanny remained the principal support of her children, granddaughter and sister Maria Bond. "F. F. Palmer" became one of the most prolific artists at Currier & Ives, producing more than two-hundred prints portraying a wide range of subjects, including farm and suburban scenes, sporting and marine prints, still life, literary subjects, panoramic views of steamboats, railroad trains, the Civil War, and the westward movement. Fanny Palmer's prints were, and still remain, among the most popular images issued by Currier & Ives. . 23" x 31.5", 24" x 32"

#15 – Framed William Lionel Wyllie Watercolor. (1851-1931). Framed, matted and under glass. This is a great seascape titled in pencil "The Revenge" with initials "W.L.W." great detail in this small work of art. There were 13 British Naval war ships that had the name "Revenge" starting in the 1500s and going to WWII. This war ship is believed to be the one built in 1859. Specs: This the tenth ship to carry the name HMS Revenge was a second rate, 91-gun ship. Built at Pembroke Dock, launched 16-Apr-1859, 245ft long, 55ft 6in wide and of 3,322 tons builders measurement and 5,260 tons displacement. Armed with 34 x 8in, 1 x 68pdr, and 56 x 32pdr guns. Used as a base ship from Aug-1872. Renamed the Training Ship HMS Empress Mar-1891. Sold 31-Dec-1923 and broken up at Appledore. Bio from AskArt: Referred to as "Britain's premier marine artist of the later Victorian & early 20th century", Wyllie composed his artistry in the face of intense observation by the established English art world. He was born into a family of London painters in 1851. His father, William M. Wyllie, was a genre painter and his brother, Charles, was also accomplished in marine art. (His own son Harold later became a success in marine art.) Studying first at Heatherley's art school, his obvious natural talent was matched by his ambition and drive. He began to study at the Royal Academy in 1865. He was 17 when his first canvases were exhibited; one of which was purchased by the academy itself because "it was bound to acquire additional historical value", being the early work of a recognizably gifted artist. With his love for the sea, coupled with his unconventional observations and great technical skill, Wyllie painted tugs, barges and anything else that floated before him, often sketching while in a small dinghy. Sight 4x6" overall 12x13.75". 4" x 6" sight

#21 – Framed George Harvey (1800-1878) 19thC watercolor signed G. Harvey with George Harvey plaque on ornate frame. Bio from AskArt: Born in Tottenham, England, George Harvey is considered by many critics to be the earliest flower-specialist painter in America. He was primarily a watercolorist, and did a number of large floral still life. He first visited the United States in 1820 and traveled in Ohio, Michigan and Canada before settling in New York City and then Boston. Many of the details of those travels are unknown. In 1828, Harvey submitted two picturesque* English scene paintings and a floral still life to the National Academy of Design* for exhibition. He listed his address as Brooklyn and on the works described the English scenes as "made from a Sketch Taken in 1819;" and the still life as "A Vase of Flowers Copied from Nature." (Dearinger) He was almost immediately elected to the Academy for membership, which indicates that although he was a relative newcomer to New York City, he had already gained widespread respect as a painter. By 1829, Harvey had moved to Boston, but he contributed to the National Academy exhibition of that year, but did not participate again until 1837, when he was living at Hastings-on-Hudson, New York and had a studio in the New York University Building. There he had built an Elizabethan-style cottage on the Hudson River near Tarrytown and close to his friend, Washington Irving. Harvey's home reflected his interest in Romantic revival architecture, and he also assisted Irving in remodeling his home "into a model Gothic Revival dwelling." (Dearinger) When settled at Hastings-on-Hudson, he began his "American Scenery" series, for which he remains most known. Completed in 1840 and edited by Washington Irving, the project had forty watercolors that he intended to have engraved* in England and widely circulated by subscriptions. However, the cost was enormous, he could not get necessary funding; and only 250 copies with four views sold. (The New York Historical Society has about 20 of the unpublished watercolors intended for engraving in England. ) This project meant that Harvey spent much time away from the United States in England and diminished people's knowledge of him in America. However, in England he became quite well familiar because he converted many of his watercolors to glass slides and gave lectures throughout the country between 1848 and 1850. He did, however, stay in touch with associates in New York City, and entered National Academy exhibitions of 1840, 1842, 1846 and 1847. Over the next few years until his death in 1878, he traveled in both America and England, lecturing on his watercolor views. Between 1872 and 1875, he was in Bermuda, and did 26 watercolor views of that Island. By 1877, he was back in England, dying the next year. His remains are buried in Taunton 9.5" x 13.25" sight, 12.25" x 21"
